The School

School Curriculum

The school offers a range of child-centered, autism specific education which draws on a range of evidence based interventions. It implements a highly individualised curriculum and continues to maintain a Behaviour Analytical Approach along with other evidenced based interventions. The school recognizes that all appropriate means of education and support are valuable in assisting all the children to develop and reach their full potential, to be active in their own communities and to lead as much of an independent life as is possible. The school has brought great hope and comfort to the families of the children who attend the school.

All students have access to the Primary School Curriculum and to appropriate post-primary programmes, where relevant. The school aims to ensure that the holistic needs of students are addressed. Specific occupational therapy and speech and language goals are available for each student.

An individualised sensory diet programme is developed for those students who display complex sensory needs.
Board of Management
The over- arching statutory body responsible for the management and operation of the school is called the Board of Management. The Board comprises of eight members. The Board is elected every four years. The members of the board are representative of the various partners in education.

The Chairperson and one other member of the community are nominated by the Patron Body. 2 parents are elected by the general body of parents. 1 teacher is elected by the school teaching staff. The school Principal and 2 other people chosen from the local community also sit on the BOM. The present chairperson is Joe Sullivan.

Parents Association
There is an active parents Association in the school who support the school in a variety of ways. The members of the Parents’ Association contribute to the development and implementation of all school policy documents in their capacity as partners in education. The involvement of the Parents’ Association is also reflected in the many fundraising events that they helped to organise over the years. The current chairperson of the Parent’s Association is Mark Glynn.
Fund Raising and Donations
Over the years the Parents Association has organized events and raised funds which directly support the educational provision of the children who attend Saplings Special School. Donations and fundraising events over the years have enabled us to employ a part-time Occupational Therapist who provides invaluable additional support for our students. We have also purchased particular specialized equipment which is required for pupils with autism, in order for them to reach their full potential.
